The most effective leaders I’ve known in my career were not the loudest people in the room. They were the ones who noticed things others missed, who followed through consistently, and who made people feel capable rather than judged.
This is the kind of leadership I learned in quality assurance — and it’s shaped how I approach everything since.
What QA teaches about leadership
Quality assurance is, at its core, about attention. You’re responsible for catching what others missed, for asking whether something is truly ready, for slowing down a process when speed is creating risk.
That requires a particular kind of confidence. Not the confidence to perform, but the confidence to raise a concern when it’s easier to stay quiet. To be the person who says “wait” before something ships.
Over a decade doing that work, I learned that leadership doesn’t require a title. It requires willingness to be accountable for the quality of what you’re putting into the world.
The HR dimension
I also spent time in HR at Catch Themes — a role that asks you to hold a lot of things carefully. People’s concerns, organizational tensions, processes that affect how people feel about their work.
You learn quickly that trust is built through consistency, not announcements. People don’t trust you because you tell them to. They trust you because you’re reliable, because you listen before you speak, because you do what you said you would.
Quiet leadership in practice
What does this look like day to day? It looks like thorough documentation so your team doesn’t have to ask twice. It looks like feedback that’s specific and useful rather than vague or performative. It looks like being the kind of colleague who makes everyone else’s work a little easier.
It looks like care. Sustained, unglamorous, consistent care.
Why this matters in a digital career
We’re in an industry that rewards visibility. Loud launches, impressive metrics, memorable talks. All of that has its place.
But the work that actually compounds — the sites that stay reliable, the teams that function well, the client relationships that last — is built on something quieter. It’s built on the kind of leadership that doesn’t announce itself.
That’s the kind I’m still trying to practice.
